Struggling to identify the right brick for the project? Don’t worry help is at hand. As the largest specialist brick merchant in the South East we pride ourselves on our brick matching ability.
Identifying the characteristics
A brick’s colour, texture and regularity, as well as its strength, durability and absorbency depends what it is made from. The clay varies across the country, and so does the way bricks are made. The colour depends on what the clay mix contains and the way it is fired. The textures of brick are just as varied. In older buildings, soft mud and handmade bricks are common, so they’re often used in refurbishment and renovation projects. Soft muds have an open texture but can have rough or pitted areas. Handmades have a texture known as ‘creasing’ or ‘smiles’. Hard bricks with smoother faces were popular with the Victorians. Their regular shape and sharp arises appeal to architects and designers too.
